A quick internet search of Billy Corgans’ resume in 2015 yields markedly different front page results than it would have in the mid to late 90’s (not that there was anything quick about searching the internet back then…). Some absurd, some apocryphal, most of them true.
Alt-Rock Luminary; Producer; Poet; Feline Enthusiast; Anderson Coopers Arch-Nemesis; Tea Shop Owner & now, for the second time in less than 5 years, Wrestling Magnate!
The majority of us know Corgan from his work fronting the Smashing Pumpkins who in their heyday pretty much took sole ownership over rock radio & MTV. Their albums “Siamese Dream” (1993) & ” Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” (1995) are near alt-rock masterpieces that acted as the coming of age soundtracks for countless teens in the Clinton era, myself included. Who among us didn’t own or at least know someone who owned a “Zero” t-shirt? The point being, the Pumpkins were a integral thread in the musical & cultural tapestry of the ’90s.
Throughout his many, MANY entrepreneurial ventures both pre & post Pumpkins, none short of music have seemed to adrenalized Corgans’ interests like his recent forays into the world of wrestling; He initially planted his flag with his co-founding of Chicago based independent wrestling organization Resistance Pro Wrestling, a company which he walked away from under vague circumstances in late 2014, citing only “creative” differences.
It seems his passion runs deeper than just the machismo and beat-em-up culture of the sport. He’s quoted as saying
“Wrestling’s one of the last true subcultures left in America. Being off the radar gives it a certain funky credibility. That’s why we can be a little more edgy — the unobserved part of it all.”
With that kind of fervor, who better to step into his new gig as Senior Producer of Creative and Talent Development for TNA (Total Nonstop Action) Wrestling, writing & developing storylines for characters & matches. On this opportunity, Corgan stated via Entertainment Weekly-““Saying I’m humbled and honored by this opportunity to be part of TNA, a world-class wrestling organization, is an understatement and a dream come true,” Corgan wrote in a press release. “What’s great is the entire TNA organization stands in full support of my music life with the Smashing Pumpkins. In return, I’m fully committed to using my 30 years of entertainment experience, along with my deep-rooted passion for pro wrestling, to take on the thrilling challenge of creatively contributing to Impact Wrestling, finding and developing new talent, and working eye-to-eye with the best of the best. For as cultures currently evolve at great speed, so must pro wrestling meet and supersede such expectations to thrive.”
Fans of the franchise seem to be torn on his inclusion, and many suspect slumping ratings as the catalyst that set this power play into motion. Regardless of where he remains in that companies legacy or it in his, no one can ever say that Billy Corgan won’t always remain one of rocks most intriguing polymath.
