You might remember that a while ago we reported on Zayn Malik leaving One Direction. Since his departure Malik has furthermore encountered some ups and downs. For example, Malik just endured a recent falling out with Naughty Boy. More recently, Malik was “dropped” by Cowell’s own Syco Records. (Syco is actually a joint venture between Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment).
Don’t fret it though. Not all is bad in Malik’s world. Despite the omnipresence of Simon Cowell, Malik has just today announced that he has signed with RCA Records.
The 22-year-old singer posted a pic of him signing the deal on his Twitter account and he Tweeted the following:
“I guess I never explained why I left, it was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who i really am! #realmusic #RCA !!”
Moments later that was followed by a Tweet that read: “#REALME”
Cowell reacted by Tweeting this:
‘We have been working on this for a while and I am pleased to say congratulations to @Zaynmalik on signing with @RCARecords. I believe they are the perfect label for @ZaynMalik’s solo career and I am sure whatever they release together will be special.”
The underlying sentiment appears to indicate that despite an apparent parting of the ways away from Cowell that this move really isn’t that at all. In fact, it looks more like a reorganization in that it was awkward to have One Direction and Malik on the same label. This would be consistent with Malik’s change in management and legal team. Hence, a change in label. However, this would also be consistent with the fact that RCA is the American recording label of. . . . . . you guessed it: Sony Music Entertainment. That’s right, SME, who again, is also a joint venturer with Cowell in Syco.
The point being that this seems more like a lateral move within the same company more than a new beginning with another employer. Thus, it appears that Cowell again has managed to keep his hand in the pot despite the appearance that he’s bidding best wishes to a budding star heading elsewhere. Interesting. Seems like everyone here is moving in the same direction after all.
