SIDE “B”: BON JOVI GOES HOME AND NEIL BOYCOTTS MONSANTO

In this edition of Side “B” we find out that Jersey’s own Jon Bon Jovi is again giving back to the community to fight hunger by unveiling plans for the “B.E.A.T.” Center in Toms River, New Jersey. B.E.A.T. is the acronym for “Bringing Everyone All Together.” Bon Jovi said the B.E.A.T. Center will work as a resource hub, providing families and individuals in need with a place to go and obtain the resources they need.

Said Bon Jovi: “The center will be a one-stop shop for everyone in the area in need and will also provide materials for job training so we can help people get where they need to be.”

Besides providing food, the center will work towards connecting residents to other programs, such as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, tax-preparation services and, culinary training programs.

In an area which was ravaged by superstorm Sandy help like this will go a long way, no doubt. The B.E.A.T. Center will also serve as the second location of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Kitchen. The Soul Kitchen, which is located in Red Bank, New Jersey, is a place where diners can pay for their meals by volunteering there or making a small donation. By donating an hour of their time, volunteers earn a dining certificate for themselves and up to four family members.

Joining Bon Jovi on this edition of Side “B” is the epic rocker Neil Young. Young, an outspoken vanguard to say the least, has decided to take on corporate giant Monsanto by way of putting out an album entitled The Monsanto Years. The album is set for release on June 16 with a tour to follow in July. Joining Young on the album are Willie Nelson’s sons, Lukas and Micah, who are members of the group Promise Of The Real.

The apparent point of the album is to take on corporate giant Monsanto which has been accused of putting profits ahead of human health and environmental sustainability in the development of new crop varieties and agricultural chemicals. Initially, the project was thought to be a joke however, at a surprise concert on April 16 in California Young and Promise of the Real debuted various new tracks that will apparently be on the upcoming album.

Remember that last year Young called on fans to boycott Starbucks because it sided with the agribusiness conglomerate in a looming fight over GMO labeling in Vermont.

Editor’s Note: “GMO” means genetically modified organism (GMO) which is any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. GMOs are the source of genetically modified foods and are also widely used in scientific research and to produce goods other than food.
