Country fans in NYC, this is a big week for you guys. First, this past weekend marked the first major country music festival to come to the Big Apple. Second, tonight Shania Twain performs at Madison Square Garden. To some neither event is a big surprise considering NYC has a country only music radio station (Nash 94.7 (WNSH)) and, the fact that country music stars also regularly visit the area to perform. (Also factor in that a 2011 Nielsen SoundScan survey showed New York had the largest country market in the United States based on album sales). Thus, the growth of country music in NYC and its surrounding areas is nothing short of amazing. From my chair, country is thriving and it is clearly one of the hotter genres out there.
So that explains why so many of you went this past weekend to Randall’s Island for FarmBorough and really, why not? If you were there you could catch headliners Brad Paisley, Luke Bryan, and Dierks Bentley as well as others like Dustin Lynch, Dwight Yoakam, and newcomers Maddie & Tae in addition to many more great artists. This three day event surely had to leave even the most causal country fan feeling very satisfied. (The festival ran from June 26-28).
“I think they probably could have done this festival a long time ago,” Bentley told reporters before he performed on Friday, when the event kicked off. It ended on Sunday, when Bryan closed out the three-day event.
Reviews from the festival confirmed that it was not only well attended but also well received. It’s great to see new artists, new material, and new fans come to the Big Apple in support of a well deserving brand of music. Look for more such events in the future. . . . .I sure will.
