1D Smashes Streaming Record Without Even Trying

The striking worldwide popularity of One Direction seems unstoppable.  With their first single released without Zayn Malik, 1D has set a new Spotify record for one-day streams with their newly released track entitled Drag Me Down.  The song globally streamed 4.75 million times on Friday July 31, breaking a milestone previously set by Wiz Khalifa’s See You Again which streamed 4.26 million times on April 17.

According to Spotify, Drag Me Down is the first track to ever hit No. 1 on the the Spotify Global Chart on its first day of release.  If the above wasn’t enough, Drag Me Down also topped the charts in 15 individual countries (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, and, the United States).

Here’s the real story here.  Drag Me Down was basically “dropped” by the band which means it was essentially just released with little or no promotion.  Despite that mode of releasing the material the band’s worldwide fans reacted with amazing enthusiasm and indeed the response from fans was overwhelming.  I think I can see the smile on Simon Cowell’s face from here with this one.
